Aether
The Spirit
The transcendent axis — healing, intuition, pure consciousness
Aether — the Quintessence, the fifth element, the Spirit — is not an element in the same sense as the other four. It is the element that contains and transcends them all; the invisible medium through which all elements move; the animating principle of the cosmos itself.
Esoteric
Esoterically, Aether corresponds to the upper realms, the centre and vertical axis of the cosmos, the crown chakra and the soul star above it. Associated with no single direction because it encompasses all directions simultaneously — the fifth point of the pentagram crowning the four physical elements. It cannot be worked with directly; rather, it is the condition that makes all other working possible.
Shamanic
In shamanic cosmology, Aether corresponds most closely to the World Tree — the great axis that connects the lower, middle and upper worlds. It is the space the shaman travels through during journeywork; not a place, but the mode of travelling itself. Accessed through deep states of altered consciousness — through drum, through silence, through ceremony and devoted practice — known by many names: Akasha, Prana, Tao, Wakan, the Field.
