The Intellect
Mind, communication, transmission, the invisible
Air is the element of breath, movement and the invisible — the medium through which sound travels, the wind that carries seeds, the atmosphere that sustains all life. The most mercurial and restless of the physical elements, never still, always in motion — the great carrier of ideas from mind to mind.
Esoteric
Esoterically, Air governs intellect, communication, perception and the transmission of knowledge. Associated with the east, the dawn, the season of spring and the colours yellow and white. The element of the mind — of thought, language and the power of the spoken and written word. In Hermetic philosophy it mediates between fire and water, carrying the warmth of inspiration into the cool world of feeling. It corresponds to the heart and throat chakras.
Shamanic
In shamanic cosmology, Air is the breath of life itself — the animating force that distinguishes the living from the dead. The winds are living beings, each cardinal direction carrying its own medicine. The shaman works with Air through breath, chant and the power of language — the voice being the primary instrument of shamanic practice precisely because it rides the element of Air between worlds. Eagles, hawks and condors are its totems.
