Earth
The Foundation
Ancestral, rooted, material, embodied
Earth is the element of solidity, density, and form — the ground beneath our feet, the body of the land, the substance from which all living things grow and to which they return. The slowest-vibrating of the elements, associated with matter made manifest and the long memory of what has come before.
Esoteric
Esoterically, Earth represents the principle of materialisation — the capacity of spirit to densify into physical form. It governs the body, the senses, practical wisdom and abundance. In the Western magical tradition it is associated with the north, the midnight hour, winter, and the colours green and black. It corresponds to the base and sacral chakras; its alchemical quality is cold and dry.
Shamanic
In shamanic practice, Earth is the great mother — the body of the world itself, sentient and sacred. She is the holder of ancestral memory, for the bones of the dead return to her keeping. Her spirits include the gnomes and land wights of European tradition, the Pachamama of the Andes, and the mycelial intelligence threading through the soil. The shaman works with Earth to ground and stabilise — to bring visions back into the body and to honour the ancestors who live within the land.
