Water
The Visual
Reflection, image, aesthetic depth, the seen world
Water is the element of flow, depth and reflection — the substance that takes the shape of whatever contains it, that moves always toward the lowest place, and that covers the greater part of the Earth. As the great mirror of the natural world, Water holds a unique relationship with the visual.
Esoteric
Esoterically, Water governs the receptive and reflective dimensions of consciousness — the capacity to receive impression, to hold image, and to perceive with subtlety and depth. Associated with the west, twilight, autumn and the colours blue and silver. The downward-pointing triangle is its sigil. In the visual arts, Water's qualities manifest as the photographer's eye, the designer's instinct for flow and balance, and the typographer's feel for the rhythm of the page.
Shamanic
In shamanic practice, the surface of still water has been used for scrying and vision-seeking across virtually every human culture — the visual and the visionary meeting at the same still surface. To truly see is an act of deep receptivity, a Water quality, requiring the stilling of the active mind so that what is actually present can be perceived.
