There isa meaningful difference between using crystals in your own journeywork and using them when you are holding space for someone else. In personal practice, your crystal allies support your perception, your protection, and your navigation of the non-ordinary world. When you work witha client, the focus shifts. You are no longer only the traveller. You are also the container, the guide, and the person responsible for what happens in that space. The crystals you reach for change accordingly.
This article covers crystals in the context ofa shamanic healing session: preparing the space, protecting your own field, supporting the client’s reception, and closing the space when the work is done. For crystals in personal journeywork, see Crystals for Shamanic Work: Allies for the Journey. Fora fuller treatment of energetic self-protection and working with draining clients, see Crystals for Protection and Energetic Boundaries.
Preparing the Space
Before your client arrives, the healing space needs preparation at the energetic level, not just the physical one. Spaces used regularly for this work accumulate residue: the emotional intensity and particular quality of whatever healing has been done there. Good energetic hygiene between sessions is not optional; it is what makes the work sustainable.
Ilight two candles before each session, one for myself and one for the client. It isa simple act of intention that marks the space as distinct from ordinary time.
Place Black Tourmaline at the corners of both the room and the treatment bed. Begin at the room corners, moving clockwise, visualising an unbroken line of light connecting each crystal as you place it. Repeat at the four corners of the treatment bed, closing the same clockwise circuit. Tourmaline’s quality is active rather than passive: it absorbs and transmutes interference rather than simply deflecting it, maintaininga clean boundary throughout the session. Set it before the client arrives and leave it in place.
Lay Selenite across the threshold and along the walls to sustain ongoing cleansing. Tourmaline protects; Selenite cleanses. The combination createsa space that is both bounded and clear. The Naica Mine in Chihuahua holds Selenite rods the size of city buildings, areminder of what this mineral is capable of at scale. Ina healing room, evena small piece does its work continuously.
Placea Rose Quartz under the treatment bed, roughly beneath where the client’s heart will rest. This is not the same function as placing Rose Quartz on the client; it conditions the emotional quality of the space itself, bringinga warmth and unconditional acceptance that is felt before the session begins rather than during it.
Place Clear Quartz clusters or points around the room to hold and amplify your healing intention for the day. Asingle clear intention set at the start carries forward through every session. The crystals hold it steady so you do not need to re-establish it each time.
If you can, smoke-cleanse with White Sage or Frankincense between clients and at the start and end of each day. Aftera particularly dense or emotional session, smudge immediately: blow out the candles, opena window, usea feather to move the spent energy out, then close it. This takes minutes and makesa considerable difference to what the next client enters.
Protecting Your Own Energy Field
This is the step most commonly skipped by practitioners who are new to working with others, and it is the one that costs the most over time. Working without strong energetic boundaries means you absorb. Not tiredness that sleep resolves, buta heaviness and cloudiness that comes from carrying energy that is not yours. Crystal-supported boundary work, maintained consistently rather than applied after the fact, is what prevents this.
Aspecific note on clients who drain ina directed way. Not all heavy sessions are the same. Some clients carry grief, trauma, or dense emotional material that is genuinely difficult to hold space for but is not aimed at you. Others, without necessarily meaning to, draw on the energy of whoever is present; you leave the session more depleted than its emotional weight would suggest. For these encounters, Carnelian worn or carried by the practitioner is the specific counter: it repels this directed low-frequency drain whilst bolstering your own vitality, without closing you off from the client. Afuller treatment of this dynamic is in Crystals for Protection and Energetic Boundaries.
- Labradorite is the primary crystal for practitioner protection during client work. It keeps your own field coherent and bounded whilst allowing you to perceive what is happening in the client’s field, functioning as an auric mirror that reflects away energies that are not yours without requiring you to engage them consciously. You remain responsive and sensitive; your energies simply do not merge with theirs. Wear or carry it throughout each session. If you also use Labradorite in your personal journeywork asa liminal opener, which isa well-established use, keepa dedicated piece for client sessions and treat it as distinct.
- Wearing Black Tourmaline on your body addsa second layer of personal protection on top of the space protection already established in the room and at the treatment bed. If you regularly work with clients carrying heavy or traumatic energy, body-level Tourmaline is not optional. It is basic hygiene.
- Wearing Hematite bracelets on each wrist helps balance and ground your own field throughout the session. Its iron content and mirror-like surface give ita deflecting rather than absorbing quality, useful precisely in those sessions where you risk taking on what belongs to someone else. Hematite’s use asa pigment has been traced back 164,000 years in South Africa; it has been in human hands longer than almost any other mineral. Its grounding quality is correspondingly deep.
- Keep Smoky Quartz or Cairngorm Quartz in your non-dominant hand or pocket throughout the session. For empathic practitioners, attunement to the client’s state can become so complete that your own grounding quietly slips. Smoky Quartz or Cairngorm Quartz keeps you physically present in your body while your attention is elsewhere. For Scottish practitioners, Cairngorm Quartz carries an additional quality of dùthchas: it grounds not to the earth abstractly but to the specific geology of the Highland world, one of the oldest landscapes in these islands. That particularity of belonging matters.
Supporting the Client’s Reception
- Place Rose Quartz on the client’s chest or in their non-dominant (receiving) hand to create warmth and personal openness. This is distinct from the Rose Quartz under the treatment bed, which conditions the space; this placement works directly with the client’s own field. Many clients, especially those new to energy work, contract before anything has been asked of them, protecting themselves from the unfamiliar. Rose Quartz addresses this gently. It does not force anything open; it removes the reason to close.
- Place Amethyst at the client’s third eye or crown to support the altered state that deep shamanic healing requires. This is not sleep and not ordinary waking consciousness; it isa specific, lightly open receptivity through which deeper layers become accessible. Amethyst holds this threshold without pushing. It also carriesa purifying vibration that clears psychic debris from the aura as the session progresses, supporting the client’s energetic clarity alongside the healing work itself.
- Place Clear Quartz at the client’s crown or asa crystal wand to amplify and direct healing intention. The wand carries your intention; the crystal at the crown helps the client receive it at their end of the same field. These two placements completea circuit.
- Place Hematite at the client’s feet to maintain their physical grounding throughout the session. Some sensitive clients begin to feel disoriented or unmoored during energy work, drifting, spacy, slightly unreal. Hematite at the feet isa simple, effective anchor. It is particularly important for clients who frequently feel ungrounded or havea tendency to dissociate.
Crystals for Specific Techniques
Extraction Work
Extraction work, which involves removing misplaced energies, intrusions, or thought-forms from the client’s field, uses crystals differently from placement work. Here the crystal isa tool in your dominant hand, actively directing energy, rather thana passive presence.
- Black Obsidianisthe primary extraction crystal. Volcanic in origin and deeply absorptive, it draws in heavy, stuck, or discordant energy and holds it. Work the obsidian point from the affected area outward, clear it between uses by flicking sharply downward or passing through smoke, and cleanse it thoroughly after every extraction session. Obsidian holds what it removes; it must be properly discharged.
- Malachite, placed in the healing space but not directly on the body for extended periods, supports extraction by drawing entrenched emotional blockages and trauma to the surface. It amplifies and accelerates what is already working in your field, which makes it demanding to use well. Reserve it for situations where the blockage is genuinely deep and the client is ready. Malachite has beena working stone since ancient Egypt, around 3000 BC; it does not ease things gently to the surface. It tends to bring them up decisively.
- Clear Quartz points used ina counter-clockwise spiral draw blocked energy out ofa chakra or meridian point; clockwise sends fresh energy in. Keepa set of points dedicated to extraction work, separate from those used for general healing. Ensure you are fully grounded and protected before beginning.
Space Clearing and Land Healing
When the work involves clearinga space rather thana person, whethera home, aroom witha difficult history, or land carrying old trauma, the crystals shift.
- Place Smoky Quartz clusters in the corners of the space to absorb accumulated density over time. These work gradually, not ina single session; they neutralise what has settled into the walls and fabric of the space over however long it has been there.
- Sweep Selenite wands through each corner and along the walls during the clearing. Selenite’s cleansing quality is immediate and active, moving stagnant energy as you work.
After the clearing, place Black Tourmaline at all thresholds, doorways and window sills, to maintain the cleared condition. Tourmaline holds what Selenite and Smoky Quartz have cleared.
When the work involves very old trauma, ancestral energy, or land-based consciousness specific to these islands, bring Preseli Bluestone. The inner circle stones of Stonehenge came from the Preseli Hills in Pembrokeshire, carried over two hundred miles in the Neolithic for reasons still debated, but clearly considered worth the extraordinary effort. Preseli Bluestone carries that deep geological and ancestral memory. Its quality in land-healing work is quiet, ancient, and precise. It resonates at the frequency of what is oldest in the land, without drawing attention to itself.
After Heavy Sessions
Some sessions are considerably more demanding than others. After working with deep trauma, grief, or dense energetic material, takea few minutes to reset before seeing another client or ending your day.
- Hold Hematite in both hands immediately after the session ends. Feel its weight and coolness. Breathe steadily until your own body’s familiar solidity reasserts itself, and the quality of what you were holding with the client has released.
- Follow with Clear Quartz held briefly at the heart or solar plexus, to clarify and settle your aura after grounding.
Then smudge yourself from feet upward with White Sage or Frankincense. Hematite, then Clear Quartz, then smoke: this sequence takes under five minutes, and the difference is not subtle.
For the integration period after significant sessions, for the client as much as for yourself, Lepidolite steadies without suppressing. When material has surfaced, and genuine change is underway but not yet settled, when the dreams are active, and the nervous system is processing something real, Lepidolite makes the process more bearable without slowing it down. Its lithium-rich Mica structure activates and aligns the full chakra column from root to crown, and its particular quality is gentleness rather than force.
Closing the Space
Taking down the healing space at the end of your day is as important as setting it up. Thank your crystals and cleanse them: abell rung over each, White Sage or Frankincense smoke, or overnight on Selenite. Cleanse the Black Tourmaline and Selenite more frequently after heavy sessions, and always at the day’s end.
Finish witha grounding practice. Stand with bare feet on earth if you can. Hold Hematite in both hands. Take several slow, deliberate breaths. State clearly, aloud or in silence, that your work is done and your energy is your own. This small ceremony, done consistently, is what makes long-term practice sustainable rather than depleting.
