To draw from observation is to look, really look, at the thing in front of you, and to translate what you see into marks on a surface. This sounds simple. It is not. The gap between what we see and what we think we see, between the image on the retina and the model in the mind, is vast, and learning to draw is largely the process of learning to see past the model to the actual visual reality.

Why we draw what we know

Ask an adult who says they cannot draw to draw a face, and the eyes will usually sit too high, roughly two thirds up the head rather than halfway. Ask for a hand and it will come out too small. Ask for a building and the perspective lines will not converge enough.

These are not failures of hand control. They are failures of looking, and they are extremely consistent.

What is happening is symbolic interference. The mind holds a schematic concept of a face, a hand, a building, built up over a lifetime for the purpose of rapid recognition, and that schema is what gets drawn rather than the thing in front of you. The schema emphasises what matters for identification, which is why eyes get prominence and are placed high, and compresses what does not.

Alongside it works perceptual constancy, the set of automatic corrections the visual system applies without asking. You perceive a table top as rectangular even though its retinal image is a trapezoid. You perceive a white page as white in yellow lamplight even though the light reaching your eye is yellow. These corrections are enormously useful for living in the world and enormously unhelpful for drawing it, because the drawing needs the uncorrected image and your visual system will not readily hand it over.

Learning to draw is learning to get underneath the correction.

A note on the right brain

Betty Edwards' Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, published in 1979, is one of the most successful drawing manuals ever written, and its exercises are genuinely effective. Drawing an image upside down so it cannot be recognised, pure contour drawing, working from negative space: these work, and they work for the reason described above.

The neurological explanation attached to them does not hold. The model of an analytical verbal left hemisphere and a creative spatial right hemisphere, with drawing requiring you to switch from one to the other, is one of the best-known pop-neuroscience myths. Imaging shows both hemispheres engaged in essentially all complex tasks, and large studies have found no evidence that individuals have a dominant hemisphere in the way the model requires.

The observation is right. The explanation is wrong. Use the exercises and skip the theory.

The modes of drawing

Contour drawing follows the edges: the line where one form ends and another begins, or where the form meets the space around it. Pure contour contains no shading, no texture, no volume. It develops edge sensitivity, the ability to follow the slow complex movement of an edge with sustained attention, and it is one of the fundamental exercises.

Gesture drawing works the other way, capturing action, movement and energy in loose quick marks that establish the dynamic without attending to edges or detail. Particularly valuable for the figure, where weight and movement are the primary expressive content, and typically practised in bursts of thirty seconds or a minute that force commitment to the essential.

Tonal drawing represents the distribution of light and shadow: light source, lit surface, core shadow, reflected light, cast shadow. It reveals volume and it is what makes a flat circle read as a sphere. It requires seeing the subject as a pattern of light and dark rather than as an object with a name, which is why the classical exercise is a white egg under different lighting. The egg has almost no visual interest except its tonal relationships, and that is the point.

Negative space drawing is the most direct assault on symbolic interference. You draw the shapes of the gaps rather than the object, because the mind has no schema for the shape between a chair leg and a table edge and therefore cannot substitute one.

Materials

Graphite offers a range from near-white to near-black, erases easily, and gives both precision from a sharp point and texture from the side. Grades run from H, harder and lighter, to B, softer and darker. A good graphite drawing has a particular silver quality that comes from the reflectivity of the particles.

Charcoal, compressed carbon from burned wood or vine, is looser and more immediate, easily blended and modified. Suited to large work and to drawings that prioritise tone over edge. The traditional life drawing medium precisely because it rewards speed.

Ink is unforgiving. Marks cannot be erased, and the commitment that permanence demands produces a different quality of attention. Its high contrast is expressive because of its limitations rather than despite them.

Drawing as thinking

Drawing is not merely a recording tool. It is a thinking tool: a way of working through ideas, solving problems, understanding how things are made.

The architect drawing a building is not illustrating a design that already exists in the mind. The drawing is where the design happens, where the constraints of structure and proportion are discovered, where the problems become visible.

Leonardo's notebooks, filled with hydraulic machinery, the anatomy of a horse's hind leg, studies of water vortices and ideas for flight, are the record of a mind that used drawing as its primary instrument of inquiry. The drawing was not the illustration of the observation. The drawing was the observation.

Where to learn it in Scotland

Glasgow School of Art built its reputation in part on the rigour of its drawing teaching, and the Glasgow Style that came out of it, the Mackintoshes, Jessie M. King, Margaret Macdonald, rests on that foundation.

Life drawing sessions run in most Scottish cities and towns and are usually cheap and drop-in. Drawing from a live model in a room with other people remains the fastest way to improve, and no amount of online instruction substitutes for the three-hour pose.

And the deepest argument for observational drawing is this. The hour spent drawing a hand is an hour of looking at a hand with a completeness that no amount of casual looking produces. This site keeps telling people to go and look at things: at a rowan berry, at a Pictish stone, at the machair in June. Drawing is the technique for doing it properly.
